The main achievement of the last four years (1994-1997) is- in the fact that the Republic of Karelia has deserved Russian and International recognition as full and equal region of Europe, an active participant and member of European Interegional organizations and programs..
Development of the International connections of the Republic was not spontaneuos but in accordance with the main guidelines of the International activities of RK affirmed by the Government of the RK for 1993-1995 and the specified program of 1996-1998 which was one of the first examples of the Federation subject with full understanding of its place and role in International cooperation.
It should be noted that active Inernational work is not the end in itself for the Government but it was conducted and is being conducted in the interests of the citizens, for creating favourable conditions for the enterprizes of the Republic, supplying the Karelian market with all the necessary goods, development with the help of foreign partners such areas as public health care, social protection, culture, education, science,
and for the sake of the improvement of the ecolgical situation in the Republic.
Real estimation of the goals and priorities in International activities allowed to avoid deadlocks in this guideline of the work and positive results are evident.
The recogintion of the role of Karelia in International cooperation of Russian Federation can be proved by the most important International arrangements hold on our Karelian land. They are:
meetings of the Presidents of Russia and Finland, the 4th Session of the Barentsregion Counsil on the level of the ministers of Foreign Affairs, the Russian-Canadian Seminar on the problmes of federalism, the International workshops of the representatives of the Constitutional courts of the European countries,on the problems of the local government (under the aegis of the Europe Counsil).
The representatives of Karelia were invited and took part in the World Economic Forum in Davos, in negotiations in the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, the United Bank of Switzerland. In Petrozavodsk were opened a technical bureau of the TASIS programs for the North-West of Russia, a division of the Veture foundation. The Republic of Karelia presented its potentials in Moscow (1995).
