General Information

Supreme Court of the Republic of Karelia is the supreme judicial instance in the system of courts of general jurisdiction of the Republic of Karelia, consisting of 18 federal city and regional courts, 34 judicial districts of Justices of the Peace of the republic. Within its competence it considers cases as a court at the first instance, in the cassation order, by way of judicial supervision of newly-discovered circumstances, supervises judicial activity of subordinate courts, studies and generalizes judicil practice. After creation of AKSSR, the Main Court AKSSR (chairman V.F.Loginov) was created on September 4, 1923.

In June of 1937, according to the new Constitution, the Main Court was renamed into the Supreme Court of KASSR. The court has its modern name since November 13, 1991.

Since July, 2014 Anatoly V.Nakvas, judge of the first class qualification, is at the head of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Karelia. Fot dedicated work of many years in the judicial system Anatoly V.Nakvas is awarded the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" II class, and was bestowed official awards on multiple occasions.

Before 1996 Supreme Court of the Republic of Karelia was located in the pre-revolutionary building on Lenin Square, from 1996 to 2010 it was located on Krasnaya str. Construction of the new building of the court started in 2004. In 2010 the Court has moved into a new building located on Kirov str. 27.
