Supreme Court of the Republic of Karelia is the supreme judicial instance in the system of courts of general jurisdiction of the Republic of Karelia, consisting of 18 federal city and regional courts, 34 judicial districts of Justices of the Peace of the republic. Within its competence it considers cases as a court at the first instance, in the cassation order, by way of judicial supervision of newly-discovered circumstances, supervises judicial activity of subordinate courts, studies and generalizes judicil practice. After creation of AKSSR, the Main Court AKSSR (chairman V.F.Loginov) was created on September 4, 1923.
In June of 1937, according to the new Constitution, the Main Court was renamed into the Supreme Court of KASSR. The court has its modern name since November 13, 1991.
Since 1987 Supreme Court of the Republic of Karelia is helmed by Boris K.Taratunin, Honoured Lawer of the Russian Federation, Companion of the Order of Honour.
Before 1996 Supreme Court of the Republic of Karelia was located in the pre-revolutionary building on Lenin Square, and in 1996 it moved to the new building on Krasnaya str. Construction of the new building of the court started in 2004.
